TrafficInfo

Last year Yahoo stopped providing free traffic services. I added Mapquest as an option in the latest version, but that doesn't have very good coverage. I have since pulled this app from the iTunes store. There are no free traffic web services to use to support it. If it still works in your area using Mapquest, that's great. Otherwise, you should just delete it. Sorry for the hassle.

Straightforward traffic info application for the US. Enter a city/state or zip code or use your current position to find local traffic reports using Yahoo © traffic services.

You can save your reports for quick recall. The purpose of this application is to quickly get text-based traffic information for the areas you frequently drive or care about.

There are no integrated maps. The Google maps application on the iPhone does a great job at traffic maps. From any incident in the TrafficInfo application you can click on a button that takes you to the location of the incident in Google maps.

To create a report, tap on the "Create New Report..." menu option. If you choose to use your current location, you don't need to enter any city or state information. TrafficInfo will try to determine your current position using the iPhone location services. Otherwise, you can enter either a zip code, or a city and state in the location fields.

For options, you can select the radius from the location point that you want to receive incident reports. You can also enter a minimum severity that you care about. Selecting '1' will get you all reports, otherwise you can set the minimum severity that you are interested in.

Included in the incident reports are long-running incidents, like construction. You may want to exclude these as they are repetitive. To do so, you can select "yes" for 'Show Today's Only' and the results will only include incidents that started on today's date.

When you have set all of the information to what you desire, tap on the 'Run' button to execute the query.

Once the report loads, you will see a list of incidents that match your criteria. If no incidents were found that match your criteria, you will see "No Results". In some cases when you have either misspelled a city or state, or if the traffic services are not currently available for your desired area, you will get a dialog telling you that an error has occurred. You can try again, but we have found that some areas are not covered by the Yahoo © traffic services.

Each result will have a title, an incident type, a direction, and a colored ball indicating the severity. Severity 1 or 2 will be yellow, severity 3 will be orange, and severity 4 or 5 will be red.

The buttons down at the bottom of this screen will let you filter the results by direction. So if you are traveling north, you may only want to see north, or north and south since incidents across the median can slow traffic in your direction as well. 'N/A' is often returned for incidents occurring on side streets (non-highways), intersections or for construction.

If you want, you can tap the 'Save' button to save the current report.

For any of the incidents, you can tap on it to go to the details of that incident. On this screen you can see more information such as the full description and the stop and start times. If the description does not fit in the designated area, you can tap on the description to navigate to a screen where the full, scrollable description can be seen.

Also on this screen you can tap on the 'Map' button and you will be taken to the Google © maps application that will display the location of this incident. We have decided not to integrate maps into TrafficInfo, but may change that decision based on user feedback.

Speaking of which, we are interested in hearing constructive feedback and feature requests. Please send your comments to support@dedfar.com.
